Water is a bit of an enigma for most people. They know they need it but the interest usually stops at bathing and quenching thirst.

At some point you may have heard someone you know talk about water quality and how they were concerned about the level of contaminants in their tap water. Or maybe they mentioned someone in a third-world country who had to walk 3 miles to get water for their home.

Maybe this conversation was relevant to you, maybe it wasn’t at the time.

I was surprised to find when I did a quick search for the water quality in my area, that our local municipal water supply contained 9 contaminants that exceeded the EWG Health Guidelines!

This is drinking water that is considered clean, safe, and potable! (FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION)

This is why I will NOT drink water that has not been Ionized

Water Ionization has been used as a method for purification for a number of years, but like the EWG mentions, the best way to ensure clean tap water is to make sure that your source water is free of contaminants as well. This is why in our household, before we ionize, we run our water through a strict in-line filtration process as well. Many people believe that bottled water is superior to tap water, but with bottled water containing micro plastics and in many cases as many (or more) toxins and pollutants as tap water, it was not the desired option for our family.

In the rest of this article, I will discuss Electrolyzed-Reduced Water in more detail, as well as why Enagic sets high above the competitors in the industry.

 

What is Electrolyzed Reduced Water?

Electrolyzed reduced water is the name used by chemists for alkalized water with antioxidant potential. It is important to keep in mind that not all alkaline water has antioxidant potential. For instance, the alkaline water that you see on the store shelves at the supermarket has chemicals added to produce the alkaline properties that it contains. Over time, drinking these elements in high doses can cause them to accumulate in the body. Most of this water will also register as an oxidant on an ORP Meter. I will briefly discuss what this means in the following paragraphs.

Understanding Oxidation

Free Radicals
Free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons. The uneven number allows them to easily react with other molecules. Free radicals can cause large chain chemical reactions in your body because they react so easily with other molecules. When there are more free radicals present than can be kept in balance by antioxidants, the free radicals can start doing damage to fatty tissues, DNA, and proteins in your body. These damaging reactions are called oxidation.  (Healthline.com)

 

 

What is an Antioxidant?

An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, leading to chain reactions that may damage cells. Simply put, antioxidants keep you healthy!

 

How do I Get Antioxidants in Water?

The alkaline water produced by a water ionizer does have antioxidant potential, which is why electrolyzed-reduced water is valued for it’s health benefits. We take ordinary tap water, filter out the impurities, and deliver a high dose of electricity. The resulting reaction yeilds an antioxidant drinking water with a high pH that is rich in Diatomic Molecular Hydrogen.

Consider this (study) on PubMed.gov which states that Diatomic hydrogen (H2) selectively reduces levels of toxic reactive-oxygen species resulting in anti-inflammatory effects.

That’s great, but what does it mean?

Breaking It Down

It’s actually pretty simple, but we need to dive in to a few more scientific terms to explain it.

Redox:

Reduction is one-half of a chemical reaction that also includes a reaction called oxidation. A substance is oxidized when it loses electrons. A substance is reduced when it gains electrons. When a substance is reduced by accepting electrons, the substance that gave up those electrons is oxidized at the same time. These two reactions are known to chemists as a redox reaction.

Reduction:

Reduction is a process which takes place when a substance gains electrons, the reason that the substance is said to be reduced is that it’s ability to oxidize another substance has been reduced.

Oxidation:

Oxidation is what happens when a substance loses electrons. When a substance loses electrons, it’s ability to take electrons from another substance increases. That increase in ability to take electrons means that the substance’s oxidation state has been increased.

Example of a Redox Reaction:

Iron rusting

One of the most common redox reactions happens when iron rusts. The process of rusting is called oxidation because the substance being oxidized gives up electrons to the substance oxidizing it. In the case of iron, the iron is being oxidized by oxygen, because the oxygen is getting electrons from the iron. At the same time that’s happening, the iron is reducing the oxygen, because the oxygen loses some of it’s ability to take electrons.

Oxidation Reduction Potential:

The ability of a substance such as electrolyzed reduced water to give – or receive – electrons in a redox reaction is called Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP). Since redox reactions involve the movement of electrons, ORP is measured electrically as voltage. A substance with electrons to give in a redox reaction will have a negative ORP because electrons have a negative charge. A substance that can take electrons from another substance in a redox reaction has a positive ORP, because it has a positive electrical potential. The ORP of any substance is measured in millivolts (mV) because ORP is a measure of electrical energy potential.

Oxidation Reduction Potential vs. Reactive Oxygen Species:

Pertaining to your health, oxidation reduction potential measures the ability of a substance like alkaline ionized water to reduce the damage that reactive oxygen species (ROS) – substances that have highly reactive oxygen ions – can do. ROS’s do damage to tissues and DNA by oxidizing them. ROS’s in the body that do this include the free radicals that doctors recommend eating a diet rich in antioxidants to fight against. The easiest way to think about the kind of damage ROS’s do to the body is that they cause your tissues and DNA to rust – just like iron – and fall apart, just like rusty iron.

Antioxidants have oxidation reduction potential, they stop the damage done by reducing the oxidation potential of ROS’s and free radicals by reducing them. So the reaction inside your body that saves your tissues and DNA from damage is a redox reaction.
